The time has come. I've spent the last year learning; about the art licensing/surface art industry, about myself and my voice as an artist in said industry, and now it's time for some action! And what better time than now, when I'm not even the slightest bit tempted to go outside unless I have to?
For those of you who aren't familiar with the terms "art licensing" and/or "surface art", here's the scoop:
• Pretty much EVERYTHING you see and use has some sort of a pattern or art on it: your coffee mug, the pillows on your couch, the art on your walls, the journal you write in, the paper you wrap your gifts in, the cards you send to loved ones, the fabric your clothes are made of, your tissue box, the plates you eat off of....EVERYTHING!
• SOMEONE has to create that art, right? So why not ME????
• Companies buy the art for their products (if the art isn't created by artists they have on staff) at large trade shows, or through Artist's Reps, or directly with the artist via their website, instagram, etc.
• Artists or their Reps negotiate the sale or use of the art based on how it's going to be used, for how long, and the quantities of products that will have the art on them. They also negotiate whether or not they want to use it exclusively, just within their trade area, or if it can be sold to other companies to use as well.
Sounds so exciting, right? It IS! And I truly feel like this is what I'm supposed to do.
THERE'S NO BETTER TIME!
I'm ready. I know what I need to do. I'm not getting any younger...so the BIG GIRL PANTS are coming on, people!
First, I'm going to work on some things for my portfolio/website. I want to stand out. I'm making NEW art for the New Year, and I'm going to create art that I LOVE, because as someone has pounded into my head for the past year, "people buy your joy". While I'm doing that, I'm going to be sending things out to some reps, because I REALLY want to find someone who believes in my work to do all of the part that I'm frankly HORRIBLE at...the "selling myself" part.
I'm also going to walk a trade show to see exactly what I need to have ready to show. It's scary, but also SO exciting to think of having a body of work that I'm proud of to show to the world! My goal is to show at SURTEX 2016, or at the latest, PRINTSOURCE 2017.
Wish me luck! Thanks to all of my TRIBE in the MATS & DWYL world. You inspire me and lift me up every single day! And especially to my husband, Brent. You've seen me through some hairbrained ideas and you always support me. This time, though, I'm gonna support YOU!!
